Sean Foley named 2005 Collegiate All-American
Sean Foley and Tony Giubardo represented Truman Rugby at the 2005 National Collegiate All-Star Championships in Boulder, Colorado in June. The West Collegiate All-Stars defeated the Mid-Atlantic, before losing in the finals to the Pacific Coast Collegiate All-Stars. Foley was named a Collegiate All-American for the second time and will tour with the USA Rugby Collegiate All-American team to New Zealand in mid-August.
Sean Foley selected 2004 Collegiate All-American / Nick Welchert named Honorable Mention.
Five members of Truman Rugby attended the National Collegiate All-Star Championships in Boulder, Colorado in early June (Sean Foley, Tony Giubardo, Tom Tajkowski, Nick Welchert, Ryan Worth). The West Collegiate All-Stars went on to win the National Championship by knocking off the Midwest 42-18, and then upsetting the Pacific Coast Collegiate All-Stars in the finals 35-19. This was the first ever championship by the West at the Collegiate All-Stars.
Two Truman Rugby players were recognized for their outstanding play. Sean Foley has been named a Collegiate All-American and will tour with the USA Rugby Collegiate All-American team to Canada in mid-August. Nick Welchert was named Honorable Mention Collegiate All-American. Sean and Nick are the first Truman Rugby players selected as “Collegiate All-Americans” for Truman State Rugby. Congratulations to Sean and Nick, and to all the Truman players who have contributed to their game.
Truman Alumnus – John “Tarp” Tarpoff, USA Eagle
Tarp has now received four “caps” playing for the Men’s National Team in summer 2002. He gained his first cap coming on in reserve at tighthead prop against Scotland in San Francisco on June 22nd. He also got reserve playing time in both matches against Canada and against Chile. Tarp is bigger these days at 6′ 3″ and 255 lbs, and he is very fit. He is solid in the set pieces, and getting the flow of the game at this new level of competition. The team has a short break before resuming Rugby World Cup qualifying matches in spring 2003, when they take on the winner of Russia vs. Tunisia in Rugby World Cup repechage action (think play-backs). Tarp played last fall in Wales for Llannelli and Whitland, before playing with the West in the ITTs in Tampa in December. Latest news is that Tarp is headed west to play the spring season with OMBAC in San Diego. Best of luck to Tarp as he pursues his dream of playing with the USA Eagles! We, as his former teammates, can be proud of the respect he brings our club. I will post some photos very soon. Here is write-up from the official USA Rugby match program (Tarp Program 2002 – Profile from GoffOnRugby.com). Photos: Tarp after USA – Scotland matchand in his #1s headed to team banquet.
