Bullets Rugby

So you're considering playing rugby with us?

Here are some prospective player FAQs about the team:

I've never played rugby before.  Can I still try it out?  Of course!  Almost all of our players never had any experience before coming to Truman.  Some players have never even played a sport before joining!  We'll teach you everything you need to know.

Is it true that only big, tough girls play rugby?  Despite what you may think, rugby requires players of all shapes and sizes.  There's a position for anyone.  It also isn't any more dangerous than other sports, so your chances of getting injured are quite low.  If you don't mind getting dirty in the mud, rugby may be for you!

Where can I learn more about the sport?  There are plenty of websites out there to learn exactly what rugby entails.  This rookie primer is a good place for people who have never experienced the sport to learn the basics.  There's nothing like hands-on learning, though, so come to a few practices and try it out!

Will it be expensive to play?  The only requirements are cleats and a mouth guard.  We also have team dues which are currently only $35/semester for new players.  We understand this may be a problem for some people, though, and are happy to work with players who cannot afford dues.  Rugby is a relatively inexpensive campus activity and a great way to meet new people.  Come check it out, and if money is an issue, please don't hesitate to talk to us about it.

So... is the team any good?  Admit it, you wanted to know but were afraid to ask.  Although it varies from season to season, we typically win over half of our games.  Additionally, the Bullets team is one of the few collegiate teams in the region which consistently fields a full side.  This enables us to qualify for play at larger tournaments, such as the Western Collegiate Championships.  Several of our players also make the select Heart of America team each year, and a few of our alumni even coach their own teams now.  Improving as a team while having fun is our primary goal.

How is the team set up?  Our team is coached by two experienced players who play as well as coach.  Besides coaching, all other aspects of the team's administration are carried out by players as well.  So while we love rugby, we're also all students, meaning we understand other academic commitments sometimes take priority.  Playing time is also primarily based on attendance, so if you come to practice, you'll definitely get to play in games.

How does travel for games work?  We have both a fall and spring season.  Our team usually has games six to eight weekends each season, with the practices beginning at the start of each semester. We carpool to games, splitting the cost of gas while the team usually covers longer, more expensive trips.  If the games are far away or over a day long, we stay overnight either at a teammate's home or in a hotel for which the team pays.  This means there are few direct expenses for players - just gasoline and meals.  It's a really cheap way to see the Midwest!
