Time to meet the returning players to the Bulls rugby team for the upcoming spring 2018 season!
Connor Flairty (senior) – Captain
Connor “Gumby” Flairty is the current captain of the Truman State Rugby squad. A senior, Connor is a Political Science major with Law School aspirations and, of course, is one of our forwards on the team. Connor is the reigning Outstanding Forward award winner. If your 21 or over, you might just catch him working at the DuKum Inn right here in Kirksville.
Jackson Boerckel (junior) – Vice-Captain
Jackson Boerckel is the vice-captain of the Truman State Rugby squad. A junior, Jackson is a student advisor at Dobson Hall. Jackson is also the most recent award winner for Outstanding Back.
Torin Halbert (senior)
No one knows just how long Torin has been at Truman (many speculate since the University’s inception), but everyone knows just how good he is at Rubgy. A leader on and off the field, Torin is a senior forward with Med School aspirations. Torin has won Outstanding Back two semesters in a row and was the previous captain of the team. In his spare time, Mr. Halbert also works at the DuKum.
Mike Sit might have graduated from Truman back in December 2017, but don’t tell him that! One of the longest tenured players on the team, Mike is a back on the team and one of the most dangerous players on the field. Mike won the prestigious Alan Chapman Award this fall for his dedication to the team. Additionally, Mike works at the DuKum Inn.
Will Sills (junior) – President
Will Sills is a forward on the team. The current captain, Will was the 2017 fall winner for Outstanding Rookie and co-winner of this fall season’s Most Improved Player with John Reilly. A junior, Will is in the education program and a Justice Systems major.
Gennaro Mercante (senior)
Another Law School hopeful, Gennaro Mercante is a senior forward/back on the team. Gennaro is a psych major and was the previous president of the team. Gennaro won the fall 2017 award for Most Improved Player. Gennaro also works at, you guessed it, the DuKum Inn.
Chuma Humphrey (junior)
Junior Chuma Humphrey is another Med School hopeful on the team. “The Chuma Train” is a student advisor in C-Hall.
Josiah Lunceford (senior)
Josiah might have joined the team later on in our spring 2018 season, but his presence was immediately felt. “Jigs” won the spring 2018 award for Outstanding Rookie.
Michael Thomas (sophomore)
Michael Thomas is in his sophomore year at Truman. A forward on the team, Michael is quickly turning into one of the key players on the team, winning the 2018 spring award for Most Improved Player.
John Reilly (sophomore)
Rocking the best mullet in all of Kirksville, John “Billy Ray Cyrus” Reilly is a sophomore back on the team. John is one of the many members of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity on the team. Additionally, John was the co-winner of the Fall 2018 Most Improved Player Award with Will Sills.
Robert Myers (senior)
Robert is a pre-med student and is in his senior year at Truman. Even after a brief hiatus, Robert played a big role in our fall season. This crazy guy, also known as “xXx,” loves himself some Dr. Pepper and beef jerky. He is a forward on the team.
Ben Altman (Freshman)
A forward, Ben Altman captured the 2018 Fall Outstanding Rookie Award. Like Connor Flairty, Ben hails from Omaha, Nebraska. Even if he looks like he’s 40 years old, Ben is one of the best young players we have and is sure to lead the team in a few years.
Lance was a rookie for our 2018 Fall season and even though he started late, his presence was immediately felt. Lance, like practically half the team, works at the DuKum Inn. A hardcore KC Chiefs fan, Lance will tell you all about his Patrick Mahomes man crush if you give him the chance. Along with Danny White, he is in charge of Recruiting and Public Relations
This guy is just plain crazy. Mark, who hails from Odessa, Missouri, brought his wrestling skills to the pitch for us last year, immediately becoming one of our best tacklers. Pound for pound, you’d have a hard time finding someone as tough, and crazy, as this guy.
Doug Oitker (Freshman)
Who doesn’t love this guy? Doug the Thug is a back on the team with the Fall 2018 season being his first. Doug has ankle breaker moves and a lot of speed, making him a hard one to tackle out there on the pitch. Additionally, he is Connor Flairty’s spirit animal.
Rory McKeown (Senior)
From Mexico, Missouri, Rory is easily one of the most talented players on the team. Rory is a back and is in his senior year at Truman. When not playing rugby, you are bound to find him at the other pitch: soccer.
Danny White (Freshman) – Recruiting and Public Relations
Danny is a freshman forward from St. Louis. Even though this was his first year at Truman, Danny is one of the few players on the team with experience playing in high school. Danny is a pre-MAE student and, along with Lance Hickman, is in charge of Recruiting and Public Relations
Chad Myers (Freshman) – Treasurer
Chad, like several others, was a rookie during the fall season. A freshman, Big Bad Chad (as he’s lovingly known as) is the new treasurer on the team. Chad is a back and, as he continues to get more experience, looks to play a bigger role on the club in the spring.
Joe Williams (Freshman) – Field and Equipment Manager
Joe is also a freshman and rookie on this year’s club. A forward, Gentle Joe saw a great improvement over the year and really looks to play a strong impact in our spring season.
