It is with great sadness that we report the untimely passing of Truman Rugby Alumnus, Tom Cella. Tom was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity, and began playing rugby in 1992. Tom suffered a severe spinal injury in a freak accident that rendered him paraplegic. Through it all, he never felt sorry for himself and worked through his problems. With the support of his family and friends, he returned to Truman and graduated a few years later. Those who knew Tom or saw him around campus realized that he was not inclined to let his plight deny him the opportunity to do anything. By report, Tom died as a result of injuries sustained during an accidental fall at his home in St. Louis. As one teammate noted, “Tom was a good friend and an even better person. He will be missed and never forgotten. Our prayers are with Tom and his family.”
Visitation will be Friday, January 14 from 4:00 – 9:00 PM at the Kutis Funeral Home at 10151 Gravois Road, St. Louis, MO 63123 (314-842-4458). The funeral mass will be at St. Dominic’s on Mackenzie Road, Saturday January 15 at 9:30 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in Tom’s memory to:
